April 4, 1930 - September 5, 2017
Melville “Mel” Schott, 87, of Quincy, Florida passed away at home following a courageous battle with cancer on Sept 5, 2017 looking out over his beautiful view of Lake Talquin. He was born in Irvington, New Jersey on April 4, 1930. After serving active duty for our country in the US Army during the Korean War, Mel moved to Miami Beach, Florida where he worked as a waiter and maître d in the finer hotels and resorts on the beach including the infamous Fontainebleau Hotel. He had many stories to tell about his “regular” customers such as Dick Van Dyke, Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra who would always ask for Mel to serve them. Upon retirement, he moved to Lake Barkley in Cadiz, Kentucky for many years before finally settling on Lake Talquin in Quincy doing what he enjoyed most in life….fishing and shooting the breeze with everyone he came in contact with at the lake. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Denise Redd (Harry) of Tallahassee; stepsons, Warren Katz of Honolulu, Hawaii and Stephan Schott (Jackie) of Adams, Tennessee; sister Jane Wisser of Brick, New Jersey; six grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of his Whippoorwill and Cook’s Corner family friends whom he loved dearly. The family would like to thank Covenant Hospice for the angels they sent to give their guidance and support. Special thanks to Mel’s caregiver, Tracey Rodgers and dear friends Kathie and Jeff DuBree. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mel’s honor to Robert F Munroe High School Fishing Team. Your donations will assist these young anglers to become active in Mel’s favorite pastime. Checks should be mailed to 91 Old Mount Pleasant Road, Quincy, Florida 32352. A celebration of Mel’s life will be held at a later date. Online condolences may be expressed at www.abbeyfh.com.
