Gloria Dianne Simmons

Gloria Dianne Simmons, 90, went to be with the Lord on May 5th, 2024, in Big Bend Hospice Compassionate Care Center at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, May 18th at 2:00 at Tallahassee Memory Gardens, next to Abbey Funeral Home. A short visitation will be held beforehand at 1:30 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, the services will be moved to the Chapel in Abbey Funeral Home with the burial following. Gloria was preceded in death by parents, Theodore Brady Parrish and Mary Virginia Wooten Parrish; husband of 52 years Curtis Lee Simmons Sr.; and son, Curtis Lee Simmons Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Fletcher Frye (Charlie); son, Lane Simmons (Donna); daughter-in-law, Marcia Simmons; grandchildren: Brady Simmons (Maddy), Cass Simmons, Bert Fletcher (Kara), Drew Barefoot (Faith) and two great grandchildren, Christian and Samantha Barefoot. Gloria was born October 2nd, 1933, in DeFuniak Springs, Florida. Gloria attended Walton County High School and graduated from Leon High School. She received a B.S. and master’s degree in Elementary Education from Florida State University. Gloria was a faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she crocheted mats and hats for the homeless and beanies for babies. She was also a member of the local Alpha Delta Kappa chapter, Leon County Retired Teachers Association, and a Lifetime Member of the National Parks Association. Gloria retired from teaching school at Sabal Palm Elementary after 34 years of teaching 3rd and 4th grade students. She loved to play the piano and sing, spend time at Seagrove beach, she enjoyed reading books, writing notes and cards to family and friends, traveling, tatting, and participating in Tai Chi exercise. Gloria’s family would also like to thank her caregivers from Home Instead who were faithful and caring over the past few years. Especially, her main caregiver “Gigi,” who went above and beyond to care for their mother.
